So the sun wasn't shining down on JuneFest this year; that's ok. In fact, it was perfect as the grey day meant less glare for communication. Communication is the key to the world for individuals who are deaf-blind.
JuneFest celebrates Deaf-Blind Awareness month in Ontario. Students from local schools came to JuneFest to learn all about deaf-blindness. They learned how someone who is deaf-blind communicates, as well as how to use a white cane. Students cheered their teachers on as they competed against each other in a blindfolded obstacle course. Agencies, organizations, consumer groups, corporations, etc. were also there showcasing their products and services by communicating who they are and what they do.
There is always something new to learn every year. There is always someone new to meet, but many come to touch base with those they only see once a year. Opportunities to share a burger from the charity bbq, or a pizza slice from Boston Pizza, along with watching Malibu Bob juggling on his stilts, while DJ Mike plays music are some of the returning activities.
In addition, this year singer and songwriter Ivy James entertained us with her own unique melodies, Craig MacLean communicated a story in ASL to the audience through an interpreter, and the Korean Traditional Music Orchestra of the Blind performed for the crowd. The Garden Club of Toronto brought plants to showcase how people who are deaf-blind can enjoy gardening and plants using all the senses, and finally, the art contest featured the unique talents and beautiful artwork of the many talented artists who are deaf-blind.
Rotary Cheshire Homes Inc. and the Canadian Helen Keller Centre were proud to officially recognize Eddy Morten as the winner of the 2013 JT Award at this year's JuneFest under the category of Involvement. Eddy, a consumer himself, has been a leader in the deaf and deaf-blind community in Vancouver for over 20 years. He has laid the foundation for many, and has been the driving force behind improving services for his community.
